This infographic shows the long-term trend in births and deaths in the U.S. While the death rate has leveled off over since the late 1970’s, the birth rate has continued to declined. Some analysts predict that this trend is likely to continue. If this turns out to be the case, the population may soon get to the point where it is not replacing itself, much less growing. And with an aging population, this may result in fewer taxpayers carrying a much heavier burden: the social programs paid for by tax revenues. Analysts point out that either a reversal in the birth rate trend or increased immigration, or a combination of these two factors could help address the problem.
