A Jefferson County (Colorado) homeowner was awakened by a dog that was barking in the middle of the night. When he investigated, he saw an intruder crawling into his house through the doggie door. The resident yelled at the man and retreated to an upstairs room. Investigators say the intruder followed and the homeowner shot the Nebraskan in the leg and head during a struggle. The intruder later died. The homeowner will not be charged, said Jacki Kelley of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. (The Sentinel, Golden, CO, 12/15/14)
William D. Jolley struck up an online conversation with a woman, and the two decided to meet at his place in Cynthiana, Ky. Shortly after she arrived, the woman stepped outside, and returned with two men in tow. The men started beating Jolley, who pulled a gun and fired several shots, wounding one of his assailants. The two male suspects fled in a car, with one driving his wounded partner to the hospital. Doctors pronounced the injured suspect dead, and his accomplice fled the hospital on foot. Police later apprehended him and Jolley’s “date,” and have charged them. (Lexington Herald Leader, Lexington, KY, 12/22/14)
